Smart Informatics enables remote surgical support with Peplink

Specialist surgeons are not always available where they’re needed most, from military deployments and field hospitals to humanitarian missions and regional healthcare facilities.

Smart Informatics set out to enable real-time remote surgical support using live 4K 3D video, instant communication, and interactive visual guidance.

Making this possible required more than advanced medical technology. The platform needed to deliver high-bandwidth, low-latency, reliable connectivity, even in environments without dependable fixed networks. Creating a portable connectivity solution that medical teams could trust became a critical part of the project.

Smart Informatics built the connectivity layer around Peplink BR2 Pro routers, using SpeedFusion VPN to bond multiple 5G connections into a single resilient link. Together with a Peplink endpoint in their own network, the solution created a portable, high-bandwidth communications platform that could be deployed almost anywhere without relying on local network infrastructure.

This setup allowed Smart Informatics to connect the operating room, LiveU video equipment, and receiving-side decoder environment through a resilient Peplink-powered connection. By bonding multiple mobile links, the platform could support demanding 4K 3D video transmission while maintaining the flexibility needed for demonstrations in different locations.

As the project evolved, Smart Informatics continued to push the technology further. Later demonstrations introduced a local 5G SA network, improved intercom communication, a return video channel, and pointer and paint tools that allow the consulting surgeon to highlight critical areas within the live image.

The project has successfully demonstrated how specialist surgeons can remotely support procedures using live 3D 4K video, real-time communication, and interactive visual guidance.

Each demonstration has helped push the technology further, reducing latency, improving collaboration between surgical teams, and expanding the platform’s capabilities. The project continues to evolve as Smart Informatics works to further optimize performance and user experience.

Smart Informatics also deploys Peplink BR2 Pro routers for remote surgical training, enabling medical students and young surgeons to observe live procedures and communicate directly with surgeons on-site, regardless of location. By combining advanced medical imaging with resilient connectivity, Smart Informatics is helping demonstrate how specialist expertise can become more accessible, wherever it’s needed.
